GREENERFRIDAY HOLIDAY GIFT AWARDS 2026
SOUTH DAKOTA — THREE CANDIDATES

No winners have been selected. Public voting is separate from editorial evaluation.

Against the Grain — Custom Hardwood Cutting Board — Small 6 × 9 inches
Reusable food-preparation board made from hardwood, with customization intended to encourage long-term ownership.
State connection: Built in South Dakota by the Black Hills woodcraft business.
Considerations: Durability-based candidate. Wood certification, reclaimed content and a quantified environmental advantage have not been established; order lead time must be confirmed.
User evidence: No reliable exact-board owner feedback or independent demand signal was located.
Scope: No validated customer demand.
Limitations: Searches found unrelated companies with the same name; their ratings must not be imported. A material specification and a custom-order page alone do not establish desirability.

Black Hills Parks & Forests Association — Maka Oniye Recycled Canvas Tote
The product specifies 100% recycled cotton canvas and a reusable shopping-bag design.
State connection: Published by the parks association in Hot Springs, South Dakota, featuring Jim Yellowhawk's Wind Cave artwork; manufacturing location is not stated.
Considerations: This is a South Dakota cultural partnership, not a claim that the bag was manufactured in-state.
User evidence: The product has a documented cultural and recycled-material story, but no usable buyer reviews or forum demand were found.
Scope: Exact product documentation, no demand evidence.
Limitations: Do not mistake artist recognition, park visitation or the association’s work for demand for this tote.

Prairie Dance — 12-inch Rusted Steel Pencil Tree
Sealed steel decoration designed for repeated indoor or sheltered-outdoor display, rather than a one-season disposable ornament.
State connection: Handcrafted in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; the Prairie Dance line is now part of Sunbird Metal Works.
Considerations: Durability-based candidate only: recycled steel content and comparative environmental savings are not documented.
User evidence: A retailer requested the pencil trees be listed again and describes them as attractive store display pieces. The maker has a substantial wholesale review history.
Scope: Pencil-tree product family and brand, not specifically the 12-inch size.
Limitations: Wholesale feedback reflects retailer experience, not measured consumer sell-through; broader brand review counts cover many products.
